Learn about Tea House: History, Definition, and a Tea House to Try When Visiting Ho Chi Minh City
History of tea houses?
Since the 4th and 5th centuries, in China, the tea culture has changed a lot when it became an experienced and entertainment drink instead of a regular drink. Since the Song Dynasty, the ceremony of drinking tea has become popular in social events, business meetings, or entertainment between politicians and artists.
In Japanese culture, tea shops appeared in the 16th century when the mastery of the tea ceremony at that time was Sen-no Rikyu requesting to build a special tea shop in the garden of Bao Quan to serve the ritual. From here, the experience of drinking Chinese tea also becomes more advanced due to interference and introduction. So far, the Japanese tea space spaces retain this subtlety and tend to focus more on the experience instead of the social atmosphere.
In the Americas, drinking tea was also gradually more popular among women. Many women across the United States have opened tea rooms with a variety of spaces. However, in general, in the United Kingdom and the United States, tea shops are less popular because the tea is produced in mass in the form of tea bags and the prevalence of fast food.
The difference between Tea Rooms and Tea Houses and Tea Shops & Tea Bars
Tea Room
The tea room is a space where you can enjoy quality leaf teas, with light lunch and especially afternoon tea with the cakes served. Usually, Tea House and Tea Shop & Tea Bars will not serve afternoon tea. The Tea Room will sell the types of teas they serve and offer teas.
At the Tea Room, you will experience tea and a ferry to relax in the space. The tea room is arranged as one or more rooms of an old house or as a separate room in the hotel. Now, there are more historical buildings to help the restoration and maintenance to become a Tea Room.
Tea House
The tea house is dedicated to serving and drinking high-quality - exclusive leaf teas and is often associated with Chinese, Japanese, or Asian tea ceremony drinking styles. At a traditional tea house, you do not use food but only enjoy tea. In Europe, Tea Houses and Tea Rooms do not have too many differences. These are two different forms of experience that customers love.
Tea Shop & Tea Bar
Tea Shop is the place to sell loose-leaf teas, with tea not prepared for you to drink with a kettle or cup but only tea for you to buy. In addition, the Tea Shop also has coffee space and cakes or treats used with tea. The Tea Shop does not serve afternoon tea.
